Be careful what you insert in your ear!

We say NO to cotton buds, hair grips, toothpicks, keys, matches, knitting needles etc. as an ear cleaning tool for your ears. These can scratch and damage the delicate skin lining of your ear canal, introducing an infection and even worse, perforating your eardrum.

As the old saying goes...

NEVER PUT ANYTHING SMALLER THAN YOUR ELBOW IN YOUR EARS

  • If you have a bacterial or fungal ear infection please avoid wearing headsets, earbuds, earplug defenders and hearing aids. These can re-introduce the infection back into the ear.
  • If you have, or have had, a perforated eardrum, ear surgery or an ear infection, only have microsuction performed for your wax removal (as no water is ever introduced into the ear with microsuction.)

Advice for General Ear Problems

Keep your ears dry when:

  • Washing your hair
  • Showering
  • Swimming

It's really important to protect your ears from moisture, especially if you've had any recent infections or surgery. Even a bit of water getting into the ear can cause irritation or lead to recurring problems. Using waterproof earplugs or simply popping in a bit of cotton wool coated in Vaseline can do wonders when you're showering or washing your hair.

Pre-Microsuction Advice

If you are unsure whether you have an ear wax build up, please complete my online Enquiry Form or call for further advice before self treatment (see section further below).

You may be advised to soften your earwax with a clinical graded olive oil such as Earol spray, up to 5 days prior to your microsuction appointment.

Please always read the ingredients before use.

Please do not overuse products containing:

  • Hydrogen Peroxide 3% eardrop solution
  • Sodium Bicarbonate eardrop solution

Maximum usage 3 days.
This will only work to soften the wax ready for removal by microsuction.

The over usage of Hydrogen Peroxide and/or sodium bicarbonate can then start to irritate the lining of the ear canal, causing sore, red and peeling skin. This causes unnecessary sensitivity and discomfort during a microsuction procedure.

I recommend using Earol or Cl-ear Olive Oil Ear Spray. These incorporate a spray which micronizes the oil into tiny droplets that cover and penetrate the ear wax more effectively.

Analogy: People use a cleaning spray on kitchen work surfaces, not drops. The reason being that the spray distributes more evenly, the same as within the ear when applying Earol to soften the ear wax.

Please do NOT use any ear wax softening products if you have:

  • Suspected perforated eardrum (hole in the eardrum).
  • Current/recurring ear infection.
  • Ear surgery within the last 3 months.

Please consult with your ENT consultant for advice first.

Post-Microsuction Advice

Here at Norfolk Ear Care, I recommend, after having microsuction, that you keep your ears completely dry for up to 3 days. This allows the skin lining to recover and helps the ear canal to start to regain the acidity. The acidity is the ears’ natural defence mechanism designed to fight off infections.

During this time, any activities involving water (such as those listed below) should avoid water from entering into the ears as much as possible by using waterproof earplugs, caps, or even small cotton wool balls covered in Vaseline and placed in the outer bowl of the ear(s). PLEASE do not push cotton wool too far into the ear canal.

  • Showering
  • Bathing
  • Washing your hair
  • Swimming
  • Scuba diving
  • Snorkelling

Self Treatments

Please do not overuse any over-the-counter earwax removal remedies that say they dissolve wax and contain:

  • HYDROGEN PEROXIDE 3% eardrops solution
  • SODIUM BICARBONATE eardrop solution

Maximum usage: 3 days – this will only work to soften the wax, ready for removal by microsuction.

Please avoid the use of:

  • Cotton buds
  • Silicone earwax cork screws
  • Matches
  • Toothpicks
  • Hairgrips
  • Keys

All this does is push the ear wax further down onto the eardrum which causes unnecessary pressure on the eardrum, resulting in pain and loss of hearing. The worst case scenario would be a perforated eardrum.
